Memory 2009

These are from a project I worked on last year. The inspiration was how memory works. I was exploring
how we remember certain things and how other memories are lost. We cover memories with other events and interpretations and I wanted to visualize this is painting.

Acrylic and mixed materials on paper.

The below are working prints based on some jewelry I was left by my Great Aunt. Most of it was broken and clearly never worn. I was affected by how the reason for her keeping them for so long was lost along with her memories of them.

Screen print, marker pen on acetate and oil paint on paper.

Van Dyke, dried acrylic used to collage with found materials

Manipulated photography with Van Dyke and bleach.

Acrylic and screen print on canvas.

This is a set of three paintings I did mid project.
I then started exploring age, it was important to create a feeling of time passing and age in the work.

Film photography. My true love.

Nan, Granddad and my dad. I think these photos show a different time and a sort of half memory for me. I know the people but not the scene. My knowledge of the photograph is from another's description.

And these are my thoughts....

These photos have been changed to look like polaroids with this amazing program called Poladroid (available to download). I think its a terrible shame that Polaroids aren't being made anymore the colours are like nothing else. They invoke this vintage era and feeling of good times and just generally cool. They invoke cool. For instance Penny Lanes photographs in Almost Famous....

I took these photos in beautiful Bath, some of them are from an amazing antique shop some are from
shop fronts and some are from a demolished building I walked past everyday for a year.
I might be wrong but I think the building used to be the Art Foundation College (the new college was where I was walking to everyday last year), The building had previously been a hospital and I was told once that they used to have life drawing classes in what had been a morgue.

What I love most about the building was the inside features outside. The old fashioned doors that no longer lead to anywhere...

So...

This is me...
